SILENCE KILLS.

Safe Space Sierra Sierra Leone is a feminist organisation that creates environments where women can speak freely, access the resources they need, and begin to move through the world with more clarity, more agency, and less fear.

OUR VISION

A Sierra Leone where silence is no longer the default. Where women and girls live with autonomy, dignity, and freedom from violence and discrimination.

WHAT WE DO

Our work moves in different forms, but it is all connected.

We focus on sexual and reproductive health education, mental health education, public health awareness, and the everyday lived realities that shape how women choose, live, and survive. Through community-led programs, creative platforms, and peer-to-peer- engagement, we make information more accessible, care more visible and support more impactful.

This looks like:

  1. Creating physical and digital spaces where shame and stigma are challenged, not just managed.

  2. Increasing access to health information and services.

  3. Supporting young people with life skills and education.

  4. Advocating for gender rights and policy change.

  5. Using media, storytelling, and culture as tools for change.

Our programs are designed to meet women where they are - and move with them from there.

Testimonials

Community Girls Circle Participant, Cohort 1

“Before joining Safe Space SL, I didn’t think I had many options. I accepted things as they were, without really questioning them because that’s how things had been for my mother & my grandmother before her.

Through the Community Girls Circle, I’ve learned to see differently: to question, to understand, and to decide for myself the direction my life will go.’’

Section 23 Attendees

“Section 23 was the safest I’ve ever felt at an event in this city. That’s not an exaggeration, you could ask any woman who was there. Just look up the reviews online.

For once, I could fully relax. I danced without being watched or touched. There was a sense of ease I’m not used to in public spaces.

What stood out most was the care. People looked out for each other. Lost items were returned, boundaries were respected, and the atmosphere felt genuinely supportive.

It felt like release. Like something heavy had been lifted. I feel so light. And beyond that, it created space for connection. I met women I’d seen for years but never spoken to.

It felt like the beginning of sisterhood among Sierra Leonean women, a shift towards seeing each other as partners, as friends, and caring for one another in a way that can genuinely change how we live.”

Volunteer

“ I’m truly grateful to be part of the Safe Space SL team. There is something distinctly different about the experience, especially being part of a team of women who take their work, and themselves, seriously.

Watching the leadership has been particularly inspiring. There is a clarity in how they carry their vision, and a cheeky daredevil attitude. In environments where women are often underestimated, they choose to build anyway, to imagine, to create, and to follow through. There is a strong sense of direction, a focus that is steady and motivational.

What stands out is that the work is not driven by opposition or negativity, but by creation. It’s about building the kind of world we want to live in, step by step, with purpose.

That is what makes me proud to be here and excited for what comes next.’’
